About Us

MEET SAKATA

Sakata Seed America was established in 1977 as a research, production and sales division of Sakata Seed Corporation in Japan. Our mission is to quickly and efficiently meet industry expectations for quality seed, strong crop performance and excellent yields. We also strive to remain aligned with retail and consumer trends, while increasing demand for delicious and nutritious fresh fruit and vegetable products.

WHY SAKATA CEA?

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) in North America is part of a growing international trend. Indoor production helps to increase plant productivity and yield while decreasing produce transportation distances to the consumer market.

In an enclosed facility, such as a hydroponic greenhouse or an artificially lighted vertical farm, growers can precisely control lighting, temperature, humidity, CO2, water and nutrients. These controls lead to precision timing of crops, shortened distribution routes and fresher product for the end consumer. Sakata Seed America is focused on the testing, development and production of a wide array of varieties that offer reliable performance, high quality and value for the indoor market.

Who We Serve

Popular Growing Methods

HYDROPONICS

Plants are grown using a nutrient solution based in water as opposed to in soil. Plants are supported through methods which may employ plastics, foams, or soil-based substrates.

AEROPONICS

Plant roots are suspended in a closed atmosphere where they are periodically saturated with a nutrient solution through a fine mistor aerosol.

AQUAPONICS

Plants are grown primarily in water that has been used to cultivate aquatic organisms (typically fish).

Types of Structures

GREENHOUSES

Glass or polycarbonate, these climate controllable enclosed structures allow in natural light and can be augmented with artificial lighting.

HOOP HOUSES / HIGH TUNNELS

These semi-circular tunnel-shaped structures typically have a metal hoop substructure with a plastic covering.

INDOOR VERTICAL FARMS

Fully enclosed and opaque rooms with vertical growing systems that use artificial lighting. Often a retrofitted industrial space; sometimes called a ‘plant factory.’

CONTAINER FARMS

Self-contained growing units that employ vertical farming systems and artificial lighting. Usually standardized for ease of replication, and often a retrofitted shipping container.

IN-HOME SYSTEMS

Small-scale growing unit with artificial lighting, which can be free-standing or table-top. Targeted for consumer use in home settings.
